This Thevara Devi Sthanam in Kulangarakonam is intimately connected

with that of Kollur Shri Mookambika Devi. Kollur is a small village situated

150 kms from Mangalore, Karnataka. It was Jagadguru Adi Sankaracharya

who bought fame to this temple by the Upasanas he observed while

residing there. IT IS ALSO BELIEVED THAT THE IDOL NOW WORSHIPPED IN

THE TEMPLE WAS INSTALLED BY HIM. Today this popular shrine is visited

by lakhs of devotees who wish to receive blessings from the Divine

Mother.

Long ago a young boy who was a devotee of Goddess Mookambika desired

to undertake a journey to worship Shri Mookambika of Kollur. Many a

trouble and obstacle accosted the young boy in fulfilling this desire. His

agony and cries to the Mother enabled him to meet with Shri Palleth

Narayanan Namboodhiri, a famous Shrividya Upasaka. On hearing the woes

of the young boy he initiated him into Tripura Sundari ShriVidya. He

advised him to go to Chottanikkara, near Ernakulam and worship the

Bhagawathi enshrined there. The child went there as advised and

conducted intense worship of the Bhagawathi. From there he left for

Kollur. As accomodations were sparse those days, the boy stayed in a

cave by the Sowparnika River. That evening he went to the temple, sat in

the mandapa and began to do japam in order to get the Devi's blessings.

For long he sat there, forgetting his hunger and weakness from the

journey. The daily ritual of the Devi riding the chandana pallukku also took

place. At that time devotees are given free food or annadhanam. A priest

noticing this young boy doing japam reminded him about the food. The

young boy replied that he would eat only after partaking of the last

prasadam given there at night which is the medicinal kashayatheertham.

At around 9.30 pm having partaken of the kashayatheertham, the young

boy went to the annadanapura.Unfourtunately he and a group of other

devotees found no food there. There attempt to get food from elsewhere

also met with failure. Tired and weak they decided to go to sleep. Just

then an old man with a red apparel, looking like a poojari approached

them. His face was radiating with an uncommon brilliance. He took them

to the annadanapura and fed them sumptously. The food tasted

extremely delicious. The young boy gratified by this act offered the

poojari a sum of Rs 101 and fell at his feet. The old man blessed him by

saying " You will be a good person and many will come to you for shelter

and relief of agonies. "

The next day after the midafternoon ucchapooja, the young boy went to

the annadanapura to enquire about the old man. Strangely no one knew

of him or had seen anyone by that description. They suggested that he

may havebeen a tantric or a pujari. The young boy was saddened when

even after he went around to all the cottages where the priests and

tantrics lived but could not find that kind old man. The boy stayed in

Kollur for a few days.On the seventh day around 2 am early in the

morning, the boy woke up seeing a brilliant light near his bed. Inside the

halo of light appeared the old man. Soon his appearance was transformed

into that of the Devi bearing the sankh, chakra, and varada and abhaya

mudras. She shone like a million suns. On seeing her, the young boy was

stunned. She spoke to him thus " I am none other than the Devi who is

residing in the temple in Kollur and is present in Kutachadri. The old man

who relieved you of your hunger and thirst was none other than me. I

have come to you knowing fully well of the painful experiences you have

had to undergo. Return to your town and install my presence in the

Shrichakra which you should worship daily. My presence in that Shri

chakra will be a source of blessings to all bhaktas who come there. Many

will come to you in distress and by my grace which you will receive they

will be relieved of their agonies". With a beatific smile the Devi then

disappeared. The boy found himself drenched in sweat from seeing this

vision. Again and again he prayed to the Devi and was overwhelmed by

her mercy, love and grace. As years went by the boy's life underwent

many changes, yet his devotion to the Devi grew stronger day by day. He

consecrated her presence in a Shrichakra and faithfully conducted the

daily rituals. That same Shrichakra is housed in the Thevara Sthanam

associated with Melamon Mattom in Kulangarakonam along with the

murthis of Sri RajaRajeshwari and Shri Mookambika.

We urge all devotees of the Mother to use this website as the doorway to

reach the blessings of the Devi. Please inform us of how we may help you

in your life, your sadhana and your love of the Mother. This is a seva we

honour in her Name.
